SAGE GUSTAFSON
Teaching Philosophy
Music should be fun, and no amount of talent can make up for focused, efficient practice. All of my students learn effective practice techniques, develop their individual flute tone, and become better rounded musicians through rhythm, sight-reading, theory, and aural skills.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are one of the best ways to invest in a musical future. Lessons early in your musical development set the groundwork for successful skills and give you the tools necessary for continued growth in solo and ensemble work. As students get more experience, lessons are tailored to each musician's goal. All students will learn about the flute, music history, theory, and the applications of all these in solo and ensemble performance.

FLUTE SECTIONALS
Whether you are working with a small ensemble, running a band camp, or trying to prepare an ensemble for competitive performances, having a specialist come in and work with the flutes in your ensemble can have a significant positive impact. Sage teaches master classes on effective practice, flute fundamentals, and ensemble playing, as well as rehearsing sections on specific musical performances. The goal of any group lesson is for students to have fun and leave with the tools to further explore their individual and ensemble sound.

BIOGRAPHY
Growing up in a musical household, Sage started piano at an early age and quickly picked up flute, oboe, and saxophone at North Albany Middle School. At West Albany High School, Sage continued her musical interests in addition to involvement in several sports, primarily ski team and water polo.

At Oregon State University, Sage decided to focus her musical interests on the flute, and had a variety of other academic interests before settling on pre-medicine. She graduated in the summer of 2017 with an Honors Bachelor of Science in Music, with a Chemistry Minor and a Pre-medicine option. Her honors thesis was an analysis of Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland, and is available to read on the OSU Honors Thesis archive (link below).

Sage is currently preparing to apply for medical school with the intention to matriculate in the fall of 2019. She is particularly interested in primary care policy and administration, with a focus on providing equitable healthcare for marginalized communities. She is continuing to perform with the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra, and plans to continue teaching and performing music for the rest of her life.
